Claude Can't Read Gmail Attachments? How to Fix It

If Claude finds an email but cannot read its attachment, download the file from Gmail and upload it directly to the chat. This is the quickest route for a single PDF. For repeated work, use a Google Drive copy or a connector that can retrieve attachment content, such as Dioveo.

As of September 15, 2026, Anthropic documents that its Gmail connector exposes attachment metadata, not attachment content. That limitation is specific to the connector: it does not mean Claude cannot analyze a PDF supplied through another route.

This guide is published by Dioveo. The first two options use Gmail and Claude without Dioveo; the third explains our attachment integration and its limits.

Fix 1: Download the Attachment and Upload It to Claude#

Start with one short PDF that you can open and understand yourself.

  1. Open the email in Gmail and download its attachment. If you need help finding the message, search for has:attachment filename:pdf and add the sender or date. The Gmail attachment search guide has more examples.
  2. Start a Claude chat. Use the plus button to choose a file from your device, or drag the downloaded PDF into the chat.
  3. Wait for the upload to finish, then ask about a specific passage or value.
  4. Open the original PDF and compare the answer with the page Claude used.

Try this prompt:

Read the PDF I attached to this chat. List its title and the main
points, with a PDF page reference for each. If any part is unreadable,
say which part. Do not fill gaps using the email subject or filename.

See Google's attachment-download instructions and Anthropic's file-upload guide. Claude's file and usage limits still apply.

If the same file works when uploaded directly, you have a useful diagnosis: the original access route was the obstacle. If it fails there too, use the troubleshooting table below before setting up another integration.

Why Claude Can Find the Email but Still Miss the PDF#

An attachment name tells you which file exists; it does not contain the file's text. Seeing invoice-september.pdf beside a message is therefore insufficient evidence that Claude read its amount, supplier or due date.

Ask for a short passage that you can locate in the document and its page. An answer based only on the email subject can sound plausible while never using the attachment. Check the underlying tool result or uploaded file when the distinction matters.

Different Claude clients and third-party connectors expose different tools. A workaround demonstrated in Claude Code or Cowork may use local files or a separate connector that your Claude web chat does not have.

Choose a Route for the Files You Need#

Your situationStart hereWhat you need to do
One or two PDFsDirect uploadDownload from Gmail and attach the files to your chat
You already keep documents in DriveGoogle Drive copySave the attachment to Drive and give Claude that document
Recurring invoices or documents across emailsAttachment connectorConnect a service that can search and retrieve the file content
The PDF fails even when uploadedFile troubleshootingCheck the original, its format, readability and upload limits

For a one-off batch, you can also download several Gmail attachments first, then upload a small selection. Keep the scope narrow enough to check every result.

Fix 2: Save the Attachment to Google Drive#

In Gmail, use the attachment's Add to Drive control, then locate the saved file. In Claude, connect Google Drive and add that document to your chat using the Drive file picker or its link.

Anthropic currently lists PDF reading for the Drive connector, with text extraction only. A scanned page or a chart may therefore need a direct upload instead. See the Google Workspace connector documentation.

Check the saved copy, especially when several revisions share a filename. Saving one file to Drive does not configure an ongoing Gmail-to-Drive workflow. If that is your goal, use the separate guide to automatically saving Gmail attachments to Drive.

Fix 3: Connect Dioveo for Recurring Attachment Work#

If you repeatedly collect invoices, compare contracts or search older documents, a separate attachment index can save you from downloading each file before every chat. Dioveo's Claude integration provides tools for searching Gmail attachments and reading document text.

Connect the Accounts

  1. Sign in to Dioveo with the Google account containing the attachments. Let the initial mailbox indexing finish, then confirm you can find a known file in Dioveo.
  2. Open Dioveo's Claude connection instructions and copy the server URL shown there.
  3. In Claude on the web, open Customize → Connectors, add a custom connector named Dioveo, and enter that URL.
  4. Connect it, review the requested permissions and approve the Dioveo authorization. Enable the connector in the conversation you will use.

Anthropic supports remote custom connectors on its Free and paid plans; Free has one custom-connector slot. Team and Enterprise workspaces need an owner to make a connector available first. Check Anthropic's setup instructions if your interface or workspace differs.

Verify One Attachment Before Processing a Batch

Replace the sender and filename in this example with a file you can inspect yourself:

Use Dioveo to find invoice-september.pdf from [email protected].
If several files match, show their filenames and email dates so I can
choose. Read the selected attachment's text, then give me its invoice
number, total and currency with the source page for each value.
Mark missing or unreadable values explicitly; do not guess.

Confirm that Claude used Dioveo's attachment-reading tools and that the values match the original. Finding a file in the index is separate from successfully processing its contents. Document size, format, processing status and your remaining allowance can affect the read.

Dioveo's Free plan includes 30 document reads per month. Larger volumes and spreadsheet extraction have separate plan allowances; see current pricing. Claude's own usage limits also apply. This is a way to try a small document task, not an unlimited free mailbox analysis.

The connector gives the assistant access to the tool results you authorize. Review permissions before connecting and only process documents you are allowed to share. Dioveo's connection guide explains the available scopes.

Prompts for Invoices and Contracts#

A narrow question is easier to verify than “analyze my inbox.” These are example instructions, not recorded customer results.

Build an invoice list:

Use Dioveo to find PDF invoice attachments from [email protected]
received between 1 July and 31 August 2026. Show the candidate files
first. After I confirm the selection, read them and make a table:
filename, invoice number, invoice date, total, currency, source page.
List files you could not process separately. Keep different currencies
separate and do not total an incomplete selection without saying so.

For a recurring spreadsheet, see Gmail invoices to Google Sheets. A one-time prompt does not activate a scheduled workflow.

Find a clause in a known contract:

Use Dioveo to locate the latest contract PDF from [email protected].
Show the matches before choosing a version. Read the selected file
and locate the cancellation notice period. Give me the relevant
passage and its source page. Say if the text is missing or unclear.

Always check amounts, dates and contractual wording against the cited document before relying on them.

If It Still Does Not Work#

What happensWhat to check next
Claude lists a filename but gives no document passageConfirm which tool it used. Upload the file directly or enable your attachment connector.
The PDF will not open on your computerObtain a readable copy from the sender before troubleshooting Claude.
Claude rejects a large uploadCheck the current limits for chats versus projects. Split the document into relevant sections if needed.
A scan produces missing or garbled textTry a clear, short PDF through direct upload or OCR; compare the result with the page image.
Dioveo is connected but the file is absentConfirm the Google account, completed indexing, and sender/date filters. Check whether the message contains an attachment or only a Drive link.
The file is found but its text cannot be readInspect the processing result and remaining document allowance. Try one small, known file to narrow the cause.
Custom connectors are unavailable in a work accountAsk the workspace owner whether Dioveo is enabled for members.

Anthropic publishes different limits for chat uploads, project files and PDF processing. Check the relevant category rather than assuming every route has the same file-size or page limit.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Can Claude read a PDF attached to Gmail?

Yes, when the file content reaches Claude through a supported route such as direct upload, a Drive copy or a suitable attachment connector. Finding the email alone does not establish that the PDF was read.

Do I need to pay to try this?

You can try a manual upload within your Claude account's available usage. Dioveo also includes a limited document-reading allowance on Free. Larger workloads may need a paid plan from either service; check their current allowances first.

Will reconnecting Gmail fix missing attachment content?

Reauthorization can help with an expired connection or a permission error. It does not add a file-reading capability that the connector does not expose. Try a direct upload to distinguish access problems from problems with the document.

Can I analyze attachments from old emails?

Yes. You can download an older attachment manually, or find indexed historical files in Dioveo. Begin with a specific sender and date range, verify the selected files, and keep the analysis within the applicable processing limits.

Does adding a connector automatically read my documents every day?

No. Adding a connector makes its tools available to the assistant. An ongoing schedule needs a separate, explicitly configured automation. Verify a one-file task before setting up repeated processing.

Stop managing attachments by hand

Dioveo finds every attachment in your Gmail, lets you search and download them in bulk, and auto-saves new ones to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.
