The quickest way to get ChatGPT to read a Gmail attachment is to download the file from Gmail and upload it to the chat. That works for one or two PDFs. For documents you need again and again, such as monthly invoices or contracts spread across many emails, keep a copy in Google Drive or connect a tool that can search and read your attachments.
If you use a Gmail connection in ChatGPT, verify that it retrieved the attachment's contents. Ask for a passage you can locate in the file; a filename or email subject alone is not proof that the attachment was read.
This guide is published by Dioveo. The first two routes use Gmail and ChatGPT only; the third explains our attachment connection and its limits.
Route 1: Download the Attachment and Upload It to ChatGPT#
Start with one short PDF that you can open and check yourself.
- Open the email in Gmail and download the attachment. To find it, search for
has:attachment filename:pdfand add the sender or date; the Gmail attachment search guide has more examples. - In ChatGPT, use the attach (+) button to choose the file from your device, or drag the PDF into the chat.
- Wait for the upload to finish, then ask a specific question.
- Open the original PDF and compare the answer with the page ChatGPT used.
Try this prompt:
Read the PDF I attached. List its title and main points, with the page
number for each point. If any part is unreadable, say which part.
Do not fill gaps using the email subject or the filename.
ChatGPT's file and usage limits still apply. If the same file works when uploaded directly but not through another route, the route was the obstacle, not the document.
Route 2: Use a Google Drive Copy#
In Gmail, hover over the attachment and click Add to Drive. If your ChatGPT plan lets you connect Google Drive, add that file to the conversation from Drive instead of uploading it from your computer.
This suits teams that already keep documents in Drive. Check the saved copy when several versions share a filename, and remember that saving one file does not set up an ongoing Gmail-to-Drive flow. For that, see how to save Gmail attachments to Google Drive.
Choose a Route for the Files You Need#
| Your situation | Start here | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| One or two PDFs | Direct upload | Download from Gmail and attach the files to the chat |
| Documents you already keep in Drive | Google Drive copy | Save the attachment to Drive and add it from Drive |
| Recurring documents across many emails | Attachment connector | Connect a service that can search and read attachment content |
| The PDF fails even when uploaded | File troubleshooting | Check the original, its format and readability |
For a one-off batch, you can also bulk download Gmail attachments first, then upload a small selection you can check.
Route 3: Connect Dioveo for Recurring Attachment Work#
If you repeatedly collect invoices, compare contracts or look up older documents, downloading each file before every chat gets old. Dioveo indexes your Gmail attachments and gives ChatGPT tools to search them and read their text through a remote MCP connection.
Connect the accounts
- Sign in to Dioveo with the Google account that holds the attachments. Let indexing finish, then confirm you can find a known file in Dioveo.
- Open Dioveo's ChatGPT instructions and copy the server URL.
- In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server. Name it Dioveo, paste the server URL and choose OAuth authentication.
- Review and accept the warning, select Create as a plugin, complete the Dioveo authorization and review the discovered tools.
- Open the new plugin from your personal plugins and install it. Then switch the tab at the top of the homepage from Chat to Work, type @ in the prompt box and select Dioveo.
Account and workspace policies control whether you can add and use custom MCP servers.
OpenAI's steps and plan availability change over time; check OpenAI's guide to connecting an MCP server if your screens differ. Our AI assistants page covers the other supported clients.
Check one attachment before a batch
Replace the sender and filename with a file you can inspect:
Use Dioveo to find invoice-september.pdf from [email protected].
If several files match, show their filenames and email dates so I can
choose. Read the selected attachment, then give me its invoice number,
total and currency with the source page for each value. Mark missing
or unreadable values explicitly; do not guess.
Confirm that ChatGPT actually called Dioveo's tools and that the values match the original. Finding a file is separate from reading its contents: document size, format and your remaining allowance can affect the read.
Dioveo's Free plan includes 30 document reads per month; larger volumes need a paid plan, see current pricing. ChatGPT's own limits also apply. Only connect accounts and process documents you are allowed to share, and review the permissions before approving.
Prompts for Invoices and Contracts#
Narrow questions are easier to verify than "analyze my inbox".
Build an invoice list:
Use Dioveo to find PDF invoice attachments from [email protected]
received between 1 July and 31 August 2026. Show the candidate files
first. After I confirm, read them and make a table: filename, invoice
number, invoice date, total, currency, source page. List files you
could not read separately, and keep different currencies apart.
If you want this as a spreadsheet every month, see Gmail invoices to Google Sheets; a one-time prompt does not schedule anything.
Find a clause in a contract:
Use Dioveo to locate the latest contract PDF from [email protected].
Show the matches before choosing a version. Read the selected file and
find the cancellation notice period. Quote the passage and give its
page. Say if the text is missing or unclear.
Always check amounts, dates and contract wording against the cited page before relying on them.
If It Still Does Not Work#
| What happens | What to check next |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT names the file but quotes nothing from it | Ask which tool it used. Upload the file directly or enable your attachment connector. |
| The PDF will not open on your computer | Get a readable copy from the sender first. |
| A scan comes back with missing or garbled text | Run OCR to create a searchable PDF, or upload the relevant page as an image. Compare the result with the original. |
| You cannot add a custom MCP server | Check whether your account and workspace allow custom MCP servers, or ask your workspace admin. |
| Dioveo is connected but the file is missing | Confirm the Google account, that indexing finished, and your sender or date filters. Check whether the email has an attachment or only a Drive link. |
| The file is found but its text cannot be read | Check your remaining document reads and try one small, known file. |
Frequently Asked Questions#
Can ChatGPT read a PDF attached to a Gmail email?
Yes, if the file reaches ChatGPT. The simplest way is to download the attachment from Gmail and upload it to the chat. For recurring work, add it from Google Drive or use a connector that can retrieve attachment content. Ask for a passage you can find in the PDF to confirm it was really read.
Can ChatGPT search all my Gmail attachments?
Not by uploading files one at a time. A connector such as Dioveo indexes the attachments in your mailbox, so ChatGPT can search them by sender, date or filename and read the ones you choose.
Do I need to pay to try this?
No. Direct upload works on ChatGPT's free plan within its limits, and Dioveo's Free plan includes 30 document reads per month. Whether you can add custom MCP servers in ChatGPT depends on your account and workspace policies.
Can I analyze attachments from old emails?
Yes. Search Gmail for the email and download the file, or use Dioveo, which indexes attachments across your mailbox history. Start with a small, known selection before running a large batch.
Does connecting a tool make ChatGPT read my documents automatically?
No. ChatGPT reads a document when you ask it to in a conversation. Connecting Dioveo gives it the ability to search and read the attachments you request; it does not schedule anything on its own.
Stop managing attachments by hand
Dioveo finds every attachment in your Gmail, lets you search and download them in bulk, and auto-saves new ones to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.
